THEME 2 - ENHANCING CANCER AWARENESS AND SURVIVORSHIP PROGRAMME (ESCASP)

Podcast on “SWIFT” Lung Cancer Detection Acaudio, an app aimed to make academic work more accessible, invited Dr Mohamad Saab to discuss his study titled “Public Health Messaging and Strategies to Promote “SWIFT” Lung Cancer Detection: A Qualitative Study Among High-Risk Individuals” as part of a feature titled “Early Lung Cancer Detection Techniques.” Funded by the National Cancer Control Programme, this qualitative study explored strategies to promote early detection of lung cancer – the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer mortality globally and in Ireland – among 46 at-risk individuals living in high-incidence areas in Ireland. Recommendations were made for public health messages that are Simple, clear, and honest; Worded positively; Incorporating a shock element; Featuring a celebrity, healthcare professional, or survivor; and Targeted (acronym: SWIFT). Ms. Megan McCarthy presents about the E-MAT Trial at the HRB DIFA 2023 Workshop. The Enhancing Men’s Awareness of Testicular diseases using virtual reality (E-MAT) trial was one of the three success stories featured at the Health Research Board (HRB) Definitive Intervention and Feasibility Awards (DIFA) 2023 workshop. During this workshop, 2020 DIFA holders were invited to meet 2023 DIFA recipients and share lessons learned. This workshop was held on the 20th of November 2023 in Dublin at the HRB Office. Megan McCarthy, Research Support Officer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, presented about the E-MAT trial on behalf of Dr Mohamad Saab. Findings from this study are currently being used by the National Cancer Control Programme to devise strategies to help detect lung cancer early among high-risk individuals. This study is published Open Access in the Journal of Cancer Education.
