UCC SONM 25 Year Book

UCC / School of Nursing and Midwifery

Course development In the last 25 years 19 new programmes have been developed within the School. The work has involved researching and writing the curriculum in collaboration with health service providers and ensuring that the prepared documentation passes through all stages of validation. A major part of the work has also included preparation of clinical sites and associated processes. The Department of Health initially provided funding to the School to either recruit a person to do the work on a full-time basis or have financed the freeing up of a staff member to carry out the work involved. The staff member responsible has led the introduction of the programme and is responsible for its operation. Academic Programme Management Structures Each of the 19 programmes offered by the School is managed by a Director or Co-ordinator and supported by administrative staff. This includes: student recruitment and selection, lecturing arrangements such as timetabling, room booking, examination processes including all contact with extern examiners, changes to the curriculum, production of annual reports and dealing with all communications with students. Each Academic programme also has a Board of Studies. Directors or Co-ordinators Chair the Board of Studies and are responsible to the Head of School for the management and quality of a programme. Each Module has a Module leader who is responsible for all matters relating to the module. Annual reports are written and presented to the Head of School each September. Director/Coordinators meet as necessary with the Head of School for consultation or review purposes but otherwise operate independently. Link Lecturers and Clinical Practice Co-ordinators working with the Allocations Officer and Clinical Skills Simulation Resource Centre (CSSRC) staff work to deliver a holistic high quality standard of education and ensure compliance with UCC, NMBI, national and international health care practices and policies.
