Each year sexual safety incidents are reported in HSE in-patient mental health wards, residential centres for the care of older people and residential centres for the care of people with intellectual disabilities. As a result, the HSE commissioned an independent review of the literature to determine the prevalence of sexual safety incidents in Irish in-patient mental health units and residential services for both older adults and those with disability and to systematically review published, peer-reviewed literature and international best practice guidelines to: (1) examine the categorisation and prevalence of sexual safety incidents in countries with a similar healthcare infrastructure to Ireland; and (2) to determine the effectiveness of sexual safety prevention and management strategies relevant to in-patient mental health units, residential units for older people (nursing homes) and people
