Dr. Anne-Marie Martin calls for Researchers to be Open-Minded and Innovative at International Research and Ethics Webinar Dr. Anne-Marie Martin was invited to speak at an international webinar on ‘Future directions: research, ethics, and people with intellectual disabilities’ that was organised by the IASSIDD (International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) Ethics Special Interest Research Group on February 28, 2023. This online event involved participants from various countries across Europe, America, Africa and Australia with differing academic and practice backgrounds. Dr. Martin’s presentation was titled ‘People with profound intellectual disability as participants in research: Ethical and Method Considerations’. Dr. Martin argued that there is an ethical issue around excluding this group from research that is generating knowledge and evidence informing and shaping their care. She discussed the need for a more open-minded approach to undertaking research with participants with profound intellectual disability. She encouraged researchers to seize the opportunity to be innovative in their work and to push the boundaries that are limiting opportunities for people with profound intellectual disability to be heard.
