PhD NURSING/MIDWIFERY About the Programme The purpose of the PhD in Nursing/PhD in Midwifery degree programme is to prepare scholars who will discover and extend scientific knowledge that advances the science and practice of nursing, midwifery and healthcare. Graduates of the PhD programme will: • Demonstrate evidence of originality in the presentation of their research findings (discovery and development of new knowledge and skills). • Make a significant contribution to nursing or midwifery knowledge (delivering findings at the frontiers of knowledge and application). • Exhibit an in-depth understanding of their field of research and a mastery of the literature and familiarity with the sources of information pertinent to their area of study. • Demonstrate proficiency in quantitative and/or qualitative analysis methods. • Develop transferable skills e.g. the abilities to critique and develop organisational structures and initiate change. Entry Requirements • To be eligible for consideration for entry to a programme of study and research for the Degree of PhD, a candidate must have obtained a standard of at least Second Class Honours, Grade I, in an approved primary degree, or other such other evidence under the University’s policy for Recognition of Prior Learning for Admission to Research Degrees. • All applications for admission to a PhD programme shall be considered by the relevant College/Faculty, following recommendation of the Head of Department/School in which the programme is to be pursued.
