The Office of the Nursing & Midwifery Services Director marks International Day of the Nurse

International day of the Nurse is celebrated around the world on the 12th May each year to mark the contribution that nurses make to the health and wellbeing of patients and to society as a whole. This year, these celebrations are taking place within the Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020 as dedicated by the World Health Organisation. The Office of the Nursing & Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD), HSE, the Chief Nurses Office, DOH and the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) had planned a national conference to mark the Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020 but understandably, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was postponed. Registered nurses across all divisions of the registrar use their professional knowledge and skills to promote health, prevent illness and provide care across the continuum of health and social care. They care for people of all ages, sick or well and in all settings across the community and in hospitals. Nurses feature in the following video from the Office of the Nursing

and Midwifery Services Director who provide an insight into the work they do in their daily professional lives including Dr Johnny Goodwin. Dr Goodwin spoke about developing an interest in mental health nursing and the road he took to becoming a mental health nurse. Dr Goodwin also spoke about how the landscape of mental health nursing has changed over the years, and the career opportunities that are available to those considering on embarking on a career in mental health.
