Providing Comfort Care at End of Life Webinar
The National office for Human Rights and Equality Policy in the National Quality Improvement Team was established to support health and social care services to prepare for the commencement of the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015 and to oversee the revision and implementation and the HSE National Consent Policy. It ran a series of Autumn Webinars including one on Consent chaired by Prof. Mary Donnelly, Faculty of Law, UCC, at which Dr Joan McCarthy made a presentation, “Ethical issues arising in relation to consent in pregnancy and maternity care”. (22 October 2020).
On the 29th May, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the School of Nursing and Midwifery at UCC collaborated with the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC), The Cope Foundation and the Office of Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD) in the Health Service Executive (HSE) on a webinar focused on the needs of people with an intellectual disability in residential care. The webinar was presented by Geraldine O’Callaghan, Candidate Advance Nurse Practitioner at Cope Foundation and focused on providing comfort care for people with an intellectual disability at end of life, in residential care facilities. The webinar was facilitated by Dr Cathy Payne, AIIHPC. The panellists include Dr Caroline Dalton, Lecturer in Intellectual Disabilities, University College Cork, Nick Flynn, GP, MYCORKGP, Ann Gilmartin, Leadership Advisor, National Clinical Leadership Centre for Nursing and Midwifery HSE and Frances Neville Nurse Lead, National Clinical Programme for Palliative Care, HSE. Over 220 people logged onto the webinar and a recording of the webinar is available on the AIIHPC website. A large number of questions were put to the panel on the day.
