Following on from this work in medical and surgical settings, the research team are now developing and measuring, in partnership with the Department of Health, a model for safe nurse staffing in emergency departments (EDs). Healthcare Workforce is a research group, led by Professor Jonathan Drennan, established to undertake research on the health workforce in a variety of settings. Recent work to date has included an evaluation of the impact of the role of Advanced Nurse Practitioners in older persons, rheumatology, emergency departments and respiratory settings; an evidence review on the role and future development of Healthcare Assistants and a programme of research into safe nurse staffing and skill-mix. The Programme of Research on Safe Nurse Staffing is testing the implementation of the “ Framework for Safe Nurse Staffing and Skill-Mix in acute adult medical and surgical wards ” and to develop and test a Framework for Safe Nurse Staffing and Skill-Mix in Emergency settings.
