Research Themes and Successes in 2020

Research activity at the School of Nursing and Midwifery is at an all-time high and staff continue to attract funding from competitive national and EU funding bodies and programmes. The research undertaken in the School is impacting on patient care, family carers and women’s health, the organisation of hospitals and healthcare policy. Our research is also responding to the most pressing healthcare needs both nationally and internationally, including the COVID-19 crisis. Examples of this impact can be seen within our health clusters and include the management of frailty in older people in acute care, the impact of COVID-19 restriction on the health and wellbeing of family carers, co-designing educational supports for nursing homes, safe nurse staffing in hospital and community settings, evaluating oncology outreach services for children, enhancing men’s awareness of testicular diseases, improving health and wellbeing for women cancer survivors, enhancing services to support exclusive breastfeeding, understanding the impact of pregnancy loss, and reviewing of The School of Nursing and Midwifery became the Top School in the Country and 51-75th in the world by academic subject rankings according to The 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. The rankings are based upon Publication numbers in a five year period, Category 2020 ACADEMIC RANKING

Innovation for Health

International collaborations go from strength-to-strength with researchers in the School being invited to present at international workshops and conferences. In addition, leading international researchers also visited the School (either virtually or in-person) during the year to deliver and take part in workshops and masterclasses. Our research is conducted under two overarching themes: ‘Translating Evidence and Innovation for Health’ and ‘Healthcare Experience Engagement and Reform’. A brief description of each theme is presented followed by a sample of some of the research stories from 2020. These accounts are featured to exemplify the impact and reach of the work undertaken by staff in the School. It also showcases the expansive collaboration with International Experts/Schools, Government Bodies, Industry, Community and Health Services, Not for Profit Agencies and Funding Bodies.
