Dr Maria Caples gave a wonderful address remembering her dearly departed colleague and friend Elaine Drummond on the presentation of the 10th anniversary of the Elaine Drummond perpetual award. Elaine worked as a team member of the Intellectual Disability team at UCC and was a valued member of staff. The award was presented to Ms Zara McCarthy, a student on the year four BSc intellectual disability nursing programme on the 18th September. Dr Mairin O’Mahony retires from the School of Nursing and Midwifery Mairin has been part of the UCC team since 2000 and has contributed to the School of Nursing and Midwifery across many areas for example being course co-ordinator for the Peri-operative nursing programme and the BSc Nursing Studies. She also held a lead role in terms of the Teaching and Curriculum Committee for a number of years. Mairin has led modules pertaining to professionalism, teaching and learning and nursing theory. Mairin partook in a Visiting Scholar Programme at the School of Nursing in University of California, San Francisco and she held a HRB Cochrane Training Fellowship. Mairin is well published particularly in the area of breast cancer awareness. She has supervised and mentored numerous MSc, DN and PhD students. Mairin is held in very high esteem by students, colleagues in the School and the wider nursing community. She is professional and her integrity is beyond reproach while being kind and supportive of her colleagues. The staff of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC wish Mairin very well in her retirement and we hope that Mairin continues to link with the School in her retirement.
