Innovative teaching strategy explores national strategies to include people with Intellectual Disability from across Europe

Following her presentation on the inclusion of people with severe/profound intellectual disability in research in March, Dr Anne-Marie Martin was invited to speak about inclusion of people with intellectual disability to students on the Masters by Research (Special Needs Education) programme in Katholische Hochschule für Sozialwesen (KHSB)/Catholic University for Social Services, Berlin. This was part of an innovative teaching strategy developed by Prof. Vera Munde. In addition to the Irish context, there were speakers from a number of European countries including France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy and Sweden who spoke about national strategies and approaches to the inclusion of people with intellectual disability to mainsteam society. The seminar was conducted online due to COVID-19 restrictions. From an Irish perspective, Dr Martin spoke about the Education of Persons with Special Needs Act 2004 and Time to Move On from Congregated Settings-A Strategy for Community Inclusion. Two students interviewed each speaker. Dr Martin was interviewed by Matthias Frank and Frank van Hove. The seminar was an interesting and innovative teaching strategy that provided students with insight to the different approaches to including people with intellectual disability in mainstream society that are adopted across Europe.
