Dr Elizabeth Weathers selected for prestigious fellowship with the American Academy of Nursing

While working in Bahrain, she initiated the first collaborative studies involving colleagues from the school of nursing, medicine and clinical practice. Elizabeth currently holds an inaugural position as the company expert on clinical research at Ion Beam Applications (IBA), Belgium. In this role, she is responsible for ensuring that clinical investigations are carried out safely and according to regulatory requirements. Her role allows her to influence the quality of care provided to patients who use medical devices and effect change in policy development across regulatory environments in Europe, Asia and the USA.

Elizabeth is an alumna of University College Cork (UCC) and currently lectures online for the Masters in nursing programme in UCC. Elizabeth is just 1 of 5 people in Ireland to become a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Fellows are selected based on their contributions to advance public health and nursing. Membership of the Academy is a significant milestone in a nurse leader’s career in which their accomplishments are honored by colleagues within the profession. Elizabeth is being recognized for her work as Founding President of the first honour society of nursing in Ireland, which is affiliated with the international nursing honour society, Sigma Theta Tau International. The presence of an Irish chapter strengthens the contributions of Irish nurses to global leadership and research agendas. In 2019, Elizabeth was elected to the Sigma International Governance Committee, just 1 year after presiding over the chartering of the Irish chapter. She is the only Irish nurse to date, to serve on the Sigma International Committee. Elizabeth’s induction into the Academy is also based on her scholarly endeavours related to healthcare services and policy development. Dr Weathers boasts a diverse and culturally rich career pathway with experience in clinical practice, academia and industry across Europe and the Middle East. She has participated in international research teams and translated findings into healthcare delivery and policy changes. Elizabeth is regarded as an expert on spirituality and health.
