Dr Angela Flynn received “The Frank McGrath Perpetual Award for Equality and Welfare” at UCCs Staff Recognition Awards ceremony

On Thursday 8th October, 2020 UCC celebrated the achievements of staff at the official University Staff Recognition Awards ceremony. Dr Angela Flynn was presented with “The Frank McGrath Perpetual Award for Equality and Welfare”. Dr Angela Flynn is a Lecturer in Nursing in University College Cork since 2001. She is active within the trade union movement and is the current President of IFUT (The Irish Federation of University Teachers). She is an elected representative of Academic staff on UCC’s Governing Body. She has a deep interest in all matters of equality and diversity. Dr Flynn completed her PhD on “Health Care and Neoliberalism in Ireland: Withholding the Gift and Corrupting the Social Contract”. Her thesis investigated the persistence of an inequitable health care system in Ireland using a genealogical approach. Dr Angela Flynn has demonstrated ongoing outstanding contributions towards equality and welfare at UCC in a way that emulates the high standards established by our esteemed UCC colleague Mr Frank McGrath RIP. Angela has worked hard to support her students to develop awareness of equality and social justice issues

Sanctuary Runners, an organisation that supports refugees and asylum seekers, developing solidarity and friendship through running. Angela volunteered to work as a nurse in Cork University Hospital’s Intensive Care Department during COVID-19. Angela has a broad vision, real commitment and is not afraid to put her head above the parapet in the pursuit of equality and social justice. In our opinion, she is a worthy recipient of this award.

Through positive role modelling, she has raised student awareness of the social determinants of health, Traveller health and the role of cultural competency in delivering just healthcare. She has been teaching across disciplinary boundaries on issues relating to equality and welfare for many years. Angela is an original member of the
