The first virtual Advanced Nursing Practice ‘Global Classroom’ was held between students on the Masters programme at UCC and Drexel University

Global health concerns go beyond national borders and discourse and many health issues benefit from international collaboration and learning. The first virtual ‘Global Classroom’ between students on the Masters programmes in Advanced Nursing Practice at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at University College Cork and the School of Nursing and Health Professions at Drexel University Philadelphia in the USA took place over 2 weeks commencing on 12th April 2020. A virtual global classroom was developed to equip students with a framework to exchange knowledge and develop transcultural competence on issues common to most countries. This initial virtual global classroom addressed two global healthcare issues for advanced practice nurses: palliative care and addiction. Experts in both fields from the USA and Ireland presented on these subjects in the virtual learning environment and online discussions were facilitated among the students and the experts. This project, a collaboration between Dr Patrick Cotter (UCC) and Ms Cheryl Mele and Dr Theresa Campo (Drexel University), brought together clinical and academic experts in the areas of addiction and palliative care from both sides of the Atlantic.
