‘Sustainability and the Environment: Developing New Disciplinary Norms in Social Profession Education and Practice’ Webinar
to envisage and develop innovative environmental education practices through interdisciplinary collaboration, and facilitate co-operation between colleagues from the Social and Health Professions in higher education and practice settings. A further webinar is scheduled in 2021 and will feature input from a cross section of nursing, social care, and youth/ community development practitioners and educators. On Friday 6 November 2020, a webinar conference titled ‘Sustainability and the Environment: Developing New Disciplinary Norms in Social Profession Education and Practice’ was facilitated by Catherine Forde, Mary Hurley, Fiachra Ó Súilleabháin of the School of Applied Social Studies, and Angela Flynn of the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The webinar is one of the outputs of a cross- disciplinary project that has been funded by the College of Arts Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Research fund, and the National Forum for Teaching & Learning. This project is examining how sustainability and issues relating to the environment are dealt with in the preparation of health and social care professionals. At the webinar in November the keynote speakers included: Dr Eurig Scandrett, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, UK; and Dr Satu Ranta-Tyrkko, School of Social Work, University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. Whilst practitioner speakers included: Ann Moran, Nurse Practice Development Co-ordinator and member of Green Flag Committee, Cork University Hospital, Cork; and Maeve Foreman, M.Litt Social Work and Mud Island Community Garden, Dublin. It was a very successful even and great to hear about sustainability in these areas and about the Green Flag work at CUH. The session overall helped to share knowledge on the connections between climate change and the Social Professions, build the capacity of educators and practitioners
