Exploring Mental Health Staff Nurse’s Views and Suggestions about the delivery of Psychiatric Medication Education to Mental Health Nursing Students

In response to mental health student nurse’s suggestions for more education around psychiatric medication, a team of researchers led by Johnny Goodwin interviewed nurses in practice about their views on this subject. Participants offered their perspectives on what areas related to psychiatric medication management could be developed and also suggested ways in which this content could be delivered. As part of this project, student mental health nurse Mark Harman was successful in his application for a Summer Undergraduate Research Award (SURE) through the College Medicine and Health, an amount of ¤2,000. Mr Harman was mentored by Mr Goodwin as part of this award and made a significant contribution to data analysis. A new module around psychiatric medication is currently being developed based on the findings of the interviews. There has been one successful peer-reviewed paper published thus far from this study, in addition to an upcoming peer-reviewed paper and full report.
