In 2010 an article on PhD Away Days: a component of PhD supervision (McCarthy, Hegarty Savage, and Fitzpatrick, 2019) was published which described peer-to-peer and supervisor support and mentoring processes that were implemented in the School. In early 2000 focus was placed on publications and staff prepared manuscripts for submission. Professor Joyce Fitzpatrick was asked to help and worked with both staff and students over a number of years. An article describing research capacity development (McCarthy and Fitzpatrick 2008) was published. The article based on a case study was guided by a strategic plan which included changing the research culture, providing appropriate research training, mentoring of junior staff, employment of an external consultant, provision of funding for PhD progression, and institutional support. Success was profiled in relation to establishment of research themes, publications, research funding awarded, and number of students registered for PhD.
