THEME 3 Maternity, Families and Primary Care (MF&PC)

Impacting Maternal and Infant Health and Well- Being Outcomes Internationally by International Collaboration between UCC and ViD Specialised University, Oslo, Norway The ‘New Families: Innovation and Development of the Child Health Services(CHS)inOslo’studyisanearlyinterventionprogram, implemented by the Child Health Services, universally targeting all first-time parents regardless of socioeconomic status. In essence this programme offered all first-time parents a personal Public Health Nurse (PHN). The study was undertaken over a four-year period and targeting all families with a first new-born in the Oslo city district. The study took a salutogenic perspective to health care provision offering an alternative philosophy to the traditional pathology and risk perspectives. The PHNs did several home visits during pregnancy and after delivery in addition to the regular check-ups and visits at the CHS. The study protocol was designed and developed with an international steering advisory committee and an experienced research study lead by Prof Kari Glavin Vid University. Prof Leahy-Warren, School of Nursing and Midwifery UCC was an integral member of the Steering advisor committee in terms of the usability of her theoretical framework and use of her psychometrically sound social support instrument, the Perinatal Infant Care Social Support (PICSS) used in the study.
