Pre-Conference Symposium - “Addressing the Underrepresentation of Men in Nursing and Midwifery” Ahead of the conference, a pre-conference symposium entitled “Addressing the Underrepresentation of Men in Nursing and Midwifery” was held on Wednesday March 30 th , 2-4pm. The aim of this symposium was to provide a forum wherein the issues relating to the underrepresentation of men in the professions of nursing and midwifery could be explored in an open, informed, and safe way. Despite many efforts over many decades, significant barriers to the recruitment and retention of men into nursing and midwifery persist. With a panel of nursing and midwifery experts from academia, practice, and education, a high-level discussion was held that went beyond clichés and stereotypes, drawing on panellists’ experiences, as well as current evidence, allowing an opportunity to seek potential strategies to address the issue. This symposium addresses a key action in our School Athena SWAN Action Plan (5.6). The panellists were Dr. Patrick Cotter (Lecturer Practitioner in Advanced Nursing Practice, School of Nursing and Midwifery); Mr Oisín Brenock (Final year undergraduate student, General Nursing); Dr. Mohammad Saab (Lecturer, School of Nursing & Midwifery) and Mr Ramachandran Rajendiran (Midwife, CUMH and postgraduate student).
