REVIEW OF BSc PROGRAMME BY PROFESSOR AINE HYLAND

In August 2007 (reported in December 2007) Professor Aine Hyland conducted a review of the BSc nursing degree. In summary the Report indicated overall satisfaction by UCC staff, students and preceptors with the BSc (Nursing Programme). The report also recognized some shortfalls and made recommendations on ways in which these could be addressed. Staff appreciated the high calibre and commitment of students. Students regarded themselves as well looked after and indicated their views were taken into account and listened to. Staff and students appreciated the facilities and resources. Preceptors were satisfied with the theoretical grounding received by students and had a good relationship in general with staff in the school. It was recommended that any changes in the future would ensure that these strengths are protected. Over time the BSc Nursing and Midwifery undergraduate curricula have evolved in response to external examiners comments, student feedback, refinement of the NMBI Programme Standards and Requirements and based upon advancements in healthcare policy and delivery. This has ensured that the programmes on offer are responsive and meet service requirements. Such changes are managed by the undergraduate programme team. Successive directors of undergraduate education (Professor Eileen Savage, Dr. Harry Gijbels, Dr. Mark Tyrrell, Professor Josephine Hegarty, Dr. Angela Flynn, Dr. Teresa Wills), branch leaders, programme and year coordinators have overseen such developments ably supported by programme lecturers, and professional support staff and in collaboration with clinical partners.
