Location of School within University College Cork

While Nursing was established as an academic discipline within the Faculty of Medicine in 1996 the Faculty itself changed over time to become the College of Medicine and Health.

From 1994 to 2002 the Department of Nursing was a constituent of the Faculty of Medicine which at that time comprised also of the Medical School and the Dental School. It was difficult negotiating programmes through Faculty meetings despite the support from successive Deans of Medicine (Professor David Jenkins, Professor John Hall) who chaired the Faculty Meetings. Professor Michael Murphy became Dean of Medicine and Head of the Medical School in 2004 and Professor Gerard Wrixon President of the University. They began work on developing Colleges within the University. Professor Michael Murphy devised plans for the College of Medicine and Health. As a result, the Department of Nursing became a School of Nursing and Midwifery, and newer Schools of Pharmacy and Clinical Therapies came into existence. The Figure below illustrates the organisation of the Schools within the University in 2019.
