UCC SONM 25 Year Book

UCC / School of Nursing and Midwifery

Library support of the School Since the beginning in the hospital based Schools, we have been fortunate to work with excellent Librarians whose expertise in sourcing and advising on stock has been invaluable to staff, students and researchers. In October 2002 when undergraduate nursing education was transferred to UCC with direct funding from the Department of Health & Children (DoH&C), a fund of €50,000 for 4 years was made available for library stock. When the BHSC opened in 2004 we were fortunate that the Boston Scientific Library - a division of the main Boole Library in UCC was located within the complex. This library specializes in the provision of material and supports for health care education. With the developments in technology, the type of expertise required changed and again the knowledge of the library staff has been of immense support to both students and staff of the School. Students are assisted with introductory sessions which support them in using the library facilities and search platforms. The library has worldwide relations with other libraries and facilities which has assisted in accessing materials for teaching, research and publications. Staff can presently request specific resources to support their teaching and learning activities through the Chair of the Library Committee. More than just storage spaces for books, libraries are important hubs that serve as centres of learning, research and professional development thus supporting the agenda evidence based healthcare practice.
