Students at work in the Clinical Skills Simulation Resource Centre

The Clinical Skills Simulation Resource Centre (CSSRC) provides an innovative, supportive and responsive learning environment for a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes. The requirement for a clinical skills laboratory was first identified in 2001 during the design phase of a proposed new Nursing Studies building in University College Cork (UCC). It was recognised that a formalised approach to the attainment of nursing skills was an essential requirement of nurse education given the complex needs, increasing technology and the dynamic and changing context of 21 st century healthcare environments. A Clinical Skills Laboratory Working Group (CSL), chaired by the then project manager (Dr. John Sweeney) was convened as a subgroup of the local joint working group with memberships drawn from the Department of Nursing Studies UCC and existing Schools of Nursing (general, mental health and intellectual disability) in the Cork region. The group were tasked with providing an initial costed estimate of space and equipment requirements for submission to the Department of Health and Children and the Higher Education Authority.
