UCC SONM 25 Year Book

UCC / School of Nursing and Midwifery

Prof. Gerard Wrixon (President UCC), Prof. Geraldine McCarthy signing Register on becoming the first Professor of Nursing in UCC

In early 1994 two rooms were allocated in Knocknacoole House, College Road. As yet no resources or budget had been assigned to support the School and Dr. McCarthy provided her own PC and printer. In 1994 a contract Lecturer Eileen Savage (located at a desk in the Department of Philosophy) and an administrator (Regina Murphy) were appointed. Negotiations commenced with the University Bursar (Mr. M Kelleher) to have a budget allocated to support the staff and programme – this was finally agreed in 1995 following another successful intake of postgraduate students and the commencement of the development of the curriculum for the delivery of the Diploma in Nursing in collaboration with the Mercy University Hospital initially. In 1995/96 two full time academic temporary appointments (Eileen Savage and Mark Tyrrell) and one administrative appointment (Regina Murphy) were made.

In October 1996 Dr. Geraldine McCarthy was appointed as Senior Lecturer and in 1998 the founding Professor of Nursing at UCC.
