SIVUH Nursing Graduates 2014

SIVUH Nurse Practice Development “Have you 3 minute Initiative” 2019

The amalgamation came about as a result of a rationalization plan for the delivery of acute health care services in Cork city. The Cork Voluntary Hospitals Board was established in the early 1980s following the opening of Cork Regional Hospital and comprised representatives of each of the Voluntary Hospitals and the Southern Health Board. The Voluntary hospitals at that time included the Mercy Hospital, South Infirmary Hospital, Victoria Hospital, North Infirmary and Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. The remit of the Board was to rationalize the services of the five hospitals as some were considered too small to meet the requirements for the delivery of health services and developing specialization into the future. The result saw the closure of the North infirmary with the amalgamation of the School of Nursing with that of the Mercy Hospital, the voluntary amalgamation of the South Infirmary/ Victoria Hospitals. The two remaining Voluntary Hospital continued to operate as acute hospitals and provide clinical placement for undergraduate students in conjunction with the School of Nursing and Midwifery in UCC. The Eye Ear and Throat Hospital closed and its services relocated, Ophthalmology going to The Cork Regional Hospital in 1988 and the Ear Nose and Throat Service to the South Infirmary also in 1988. Today the SIVUH is a section 38 Voluntary Hospital governed by a Board of Directors. It is primarily an elective hospital concentrating on: pre admission assessment, day of surgery admission, short length of stay, and is regional centre for a number of services including ENT, dermatology, ophthalmic surgery, chronic pain services. The SIVUH continues to be an important clinical partner for the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC.
