UCC / School of Nursing and Midwifery

EILEEN SAVAGE 2012-2018

As Dean, I led the continuing growth and development of the School of Nursing and Midwifery with a strategic emphasis on acknowledging student achievements, online programme delivery, growth in postgraduate programmes, internationalization, building capacity for collaborative research and growth in income, and staff development. I introduced the Student Award Ceremony acknowledging student achievements including academic and extra-curricular activities. Significant areas of growth and development during this period included: blended/ online postgraduate programmes from one to ten; taught postgraduate programmes from eight to sixteen; recruitment of international students from four to fifty. The global reach of our students outside Ireland grew from three to fourteen countries by 2018. Research income during this term was €4.5 million in total, and research collaborations with clinical partners in the health services and with other disciplines continued to strengthen. Staff development was enhanced through leadership programmes with an emphasis on building capacity for leadership roles aimed to support the sustainability of growth and development in the School. A major highlight for the School was that in 2016 it was ranked in the top 50 of the QS World Rankings by Subject, and since then remains in the top 100 world ranking. In 2018, the School took pride in launching an impact statement titled ‘Growth, Innovation, and Impact of the School of Nursing and Midwifery’ that profiled its accomplishments and successes, reflecting the ambitious and collective aspirations of all staff in the School.
