Research: Development, Current Status and Future Plans

Research themes for the School were first published in 2005 in the inaugural annual research report. Four themes centred on healthcare settings and speciality areas of nursing. Today these themes have evolved to reflect the growing areas of expertise in the School and are rooted in global priority areas of health and healthcare systems. Particularly in the last decade staff have moved to establish realistic research themes; research funding and publications in high impact journals have been increasing. Several text books have been published. There has been a shift from individual to collective research and a movement to interdisciplinary work for many staff members.

Research themes at the School of Nursing and Midwifery

Our research is conducted under two overarching themes: ‘Translating Evidence and Innovation for Health’ and ‘Healthcare Experience Engagement and Reform’. Within the area of Translating Innovation and Evidence for Health there are a number of sub-themes, including: Supporting Ageing in the 21 st Century, Enhancing Cancer Awareness and Survivorship (ECASP), and Maternity, Families and Primary Care. In the area of Healthcare Experience and Reform the themes include: Healthcare Workforce, Healthcare Ethics and End-of-Life Care, Mental Health and Wellbeing, and Living Well with Chronic Conditions and Disability. A major revision of the Schools website took place in 2018 and now each theme has its own webpage which profiles the mission, membership, active projects and associated research students https://www.ucc.ie/en/ nursingmidwifery/research/. Furthermore the research committee published the first annual impact brochure which was designed to showcase the research and innovation in the School.
