SUCCESS FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS

Students on the Doctoral journey count successful completion of their doctorate as the ultimate success. However success is also measured in terms of knowledge and skills development, presentations and publications. Many students have had their work recognised at international conferences. Some of these successes are mentioned here. Lloyd Philpott won first poster prize at the International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing (INDEN) conference 2018 for a poster titled “Stress in Fathers in the Perinatal Period: A Systematic Review”. Mohamad Saab received a number of prizes whilst completing his doctorate for example best poster awards at both the 9th Irish Research Nurses Network Annual National Conference, Dublin (2016) and the RCSI 36th Annual International Nursing & Midwifery Research and Education Conference (2017). Both posters related to the development and testing of a virtual reality intervention for younger men to raise awareness of testicular disorders. As a follow on to his PhD study Dr Saab received the Joan K. Stout International Nursing Research Grant from Sigma in order to conduct a study titled “Nursing Students’ Views Regarding the Use of Virtual Reality Simulation to Enhance Men’s Awareness of Testicular Diseases: A Qualitative Exploration.” Similarly Sinéad Horgan received prizes for her doctoral work at both the National Sepsis Summit in September 2019 and the National Patient Safety Conference in November 2019. Sinéad’s work is a quality improvement initiative to prevent surgical site infection and sepsis in elective colorectal surgical patients. Receiving both awards is great recognition for the multidisciplinary team involved in this quality improvement initiative. It is a perfect example of how collaboration between Cork University Hospital, the South/South West Hospital Group and the School of Nursing and Midwifery in UCC can facilitate and support quality improvement.
