STUDENT NURSE PLACEMENT IN DIVERSE LOCATIONS

Students have had clinical placement experience in several countries including the United States of America and France, their experiences are profiled below.

“I want to work in a completely different healthcare system I want to see how patients differ to those in Ireland and what the most prevalent conditions in the US are in comparison to here … I aspire to gain extra experience that can benefit me throughout the rest of my BSc nursing degree and for my future career. I want to be out of my comfort zone and open my mind to new things and new ways of doing….

NORTH SHORE – LONG ISLAND HEALTH SYSTEM (recent name changes to Northwell)

Due to an alliance between the UCC College of Medicine and Health and with the associated nursing personnel (Especially Dr. Cathy Gallo, RN, Senior Vice President and Chief Learning Officer, North Shore LIJ Health System) a number of students have had experience in a range of services in the above organisation. The organisation is led by an Irish emigrant Michael Dowling who has hosted students in several locations within the health service he Manages. Students who applied for the experience wrote messages such as:

I want to see different nursing methods and technology .. it is a fantastic opportunity.”

“I would love the chance to be an ambassador for UCC and travel to the USA for the experience … it is an amazing opportunity .. on return I will share new found knowledge with my fellow students and colleagues”

“Gaining experience and insight into a different health care system and the culture of a different country will be beneficial”

“The cultural diversity I will encounter will benefit my career and patients I will care for through my career”
