In 2012, an ambitious strategic decision was taken to expand the school’s international engagement beyond Europe. Following a successful exploratory visit to India in 2012 by Professor Eileen Savage, Dr. Sean Kelleher and Dr. Rhona O’Connell, four Indian students commenced their studies in September 2013. Since then the annual growth of international students studying at the school has steadily increased to fifty students per annum at undergraduate, accelerated undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral levels. In accordance with UCC’s global strategic plan, the School of Nursing and Midwifery’s international engagement continues to consolidate current partnerships and attract new ones. School of Nursing and Midwifery international students and graduates represent 16 countries outside the EU: Brunei, Malaysia, India, Korea, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, North America, Ghana, Philippines, Lebanon, Nigeria, China, Canada, Kuwait, Pakistan & Malawi. The School of Nursing and Midwifery has connections with 40 countries worldwide through research & education. School of Nursing and Midwifery was the first school in UCC to host an International Week in November 2018, attracting many current & potential Erasmus partners. This has now become an annual event. The School of Nursing and Midwifery’s global engagement and internationalisation strategy has resulted in a steady increase in student numbers. This has greatly enhanced student and staff’s inter-cultural awareness and engagement and heralds exciting opportunities & challenges for all.
