POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE/DIPLOMAS IN SPECIALIST AREAS OF CLINICAL PRACTICE

All postgraduate programmes contain some element of blended learning. This means that modules are delivered on campus with face-to-face contact with lecturers (teaching and learning strategies include lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials) in combination with some online content delivery using virtual learning environments such as Blackboard and latterly Canvas. Students who successfully complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing to the value of 30 credits can be granted exemptions for these modules in the relevant MSc within the School of Nursing and Midwifery at UCC.

Postgraduate Certificates are offered in Gerontological Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing and Oncology Nursing.

Postgraduate diplomas (60 credits) are currently offered in: Gerontological Nursing; Emergency Nursing; Intensive Care Nursing; Practice Nursing; Recovery-Focused Mental Health Nursing; Neonatology Nursing; Medical and Surgical Nursing; Oncology Nursing; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; Public Health Nursing. Such postgraduate education provides nurses with the relevant knowledge and skills to work as members of the health care teams in a variety of settings thus meeting the complex needs of patients and their families.

Students who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma have the choice to proceed directly onto the Master’s programme. The MSc in Nursing currently offers 7 clinical specialist pathways and is available as a full-time programme completed over two years from the date of first registration for the programme (i.e. 60 credits in Year 1 and 30 credits in Year 2). The 30 credits in year two relates involves the study of advanced research methods and the completion of a dissertation.
