32nd International Confederation of Midwives: Strengthening Midwifery Globally Conference held in June 2021

Dr Mohamad Saab and Ms Helen Leahy present on end-of-life care in Ireland during the “End of Life and Palliative Care in Europe” Erasmus event Dr Saab (UCC) and Ms Leahy (Marymount) were invited by the Institut de Formation des Professions Paramédicales René TOSTIVINT in France to deliver a 20-minute presentation on end-of-life care in Ireland. This 4-hour virtual Erasmus event took place on December 16, 2021 and was attended by a number of Erasmus partners from Italy, Spain, Lithuania, Portugal, Belgium, Lebanon, Switzerland, Ireland, and France. Presentations covered the distinction between end-of-life and palliative care; patient rights; end-of-life legislation; and the role of the nurse in end-of-life and palliative care decision-making.

Agnes Phelan presented at the 32nd International ConfederationofMidwives: StrengtheningMidwiferyGlobally Conference held in June 2021. www.internationalmidwives. org This conference was presented virtually this year with a global reach to midwives in many countries. The title of her presentation was ‘A critical analysis of the relevance of models of ‘resilience’ in ensuring productive and fulfilling work environments for midwives’. This was an oral concurrent presentation. Agnes is undertaking a Doctorate in Social Science. Her research explores whether ‘resilience’ is meaningful as a model/tool to address barriers to productive and fulfilling workspaces for midwives. Specifically, the research seeks to explore how midwives in Ireland experience their work

• End-of-life care is not all that specialist palliative care is about. This is often misunderstood leading to reluctance/inappropriate timing of referral from patients, families, and healthcare professionals. • In Ireland, a patient has a right to specialist palliative and end-of-life care regardless of the care setting.
