Theme 3 – Mental Health and Wellbeing Research for the 21st Century: People, Organisations, and Places

Mission statement: Working within person-centred and PPI frameworks, we apply contemporary, evidence-basedand innovativeapproaches toresearch and practice in order to improve the mental health and wellbeing of service users, staff, and the population as a whole. We deliver on the principles of diversity, equality, and inclusion within the work we do. We are passionate about working with experts by experience and engaging participants and service users in our research from conception to completion, and beyond. People: We conduct research aimed at improving the mental health and wellbeing of individuals, groups of people, and marginalised populations. Through existing and innovative research techniques, we develop interventions to improve the quality of life for people from all walks of life. Organisations: We examine effectiveways of improving healthcare in various settings for the betterment of the organisation, the maximisation of mental health and wellbeing of staff and service users. We teach and facilitate learning around new paradigms and approaches to mental health and wellbeing research and practice, both within the university and in other settings. Places: We explore the use of spaces and places with the aim of improving metal health and maximising wellbeing outcomes for people. We examine the many factors that can impact the mental health and wellbeing of groups and individuals including social, cultural, environmental, occupational, and economic factors.

The following stories provide an example of some of the work undertaken as part of this research theme in 2021.

Safe4Child: Erasmus+ Funding awarded to conduct an International Intervention Study to reduce coercive practice, seclusion and restraint in child and adolescent residential units This project, due to commence in February 2022, is being undertaken in UCC and partner sites in Finland, Germany and Bulgaria and will involve the development and evaluation of a high fidelity VR based educational programme. The project is being led in UCC by Dr Aine O’Donovan along with a team from the SoNM (Margaret Curtin, Mohamad Saab, Sinead Heffernan, James O Mahony, Peter Kelly, Maria O’Malley, Liam Doody, Johnny Goodwin, Emma Hurley).

Launch of Report of the Evaluation of the Implementation of Peer Group Clinical Supervision for Nurses in the HSE South The report was launched in January, providing an important evidence base to support the introduction and sustainability of Peer Group Clinical Supervision.
