TRANSLATING EVIDENCE & INNOVATION FOR HEALTH

Highlights

Publication of a teaching and practice resource guide for Public Health Nurses The guide originated in 2009 when Ms Carmel Buckley (now adjunct Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery UCC) and Dr Helen Mulcahy, with funding from the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit (NMPDU) in Cork developed a Community Profiling and Health Needs Assessment: A Guide for Public Health Nurses (Buckley & Mulcahy 2009, 2011). This template formalised the collection of health determinant data to inform clinically based public health nursing caseloads. It was integrated as an assessment for a core module (NU6041) on the Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health Nursing. However, this resource was not widely accessible beyond the classroom. With approval and support of Ms Anne Walsh, Director, and assistance of Ms Johanna Downey, both from NMPDU, HSE South (Cork/Kerry) the existing guide was updated and enhanced as an editable document and made widely accessible: Mulcahy H. and Downey J. (2021) Community Profiling and Health Needs Assessment. APractical Guide for Public Health Nurses. Edition 5: June 2021. Cork, University College Cork and HSE Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit. ISBN 978-1-906642-99-0 • Presentations and discussions with groups of Ugandan health care professionals, using a Zoom online platform enabled them to access educational support, and provided a valuable learning experience for UCC personnel. • This was a community contribution initiative in support of a non-governmental organisation registered in Uganda and Ireland with a vision to Empower African Families.
