First fully online conference is a huge success! 2.03.2021

The School’s 20th Annual Research Conference (postponed from Nov 2020) was held on Feb 4th. This was the first time we had hosted our annual conference entirely online and it was a huge success. Just over 180 attendees from near and far logged on to hear the latest in research and innovations from nursing and midwifery, and to enjoy superb keynote speeches from Ms Annette Kennedy, the President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN), and from Professor Soo Downe (OBE) from the University of Central Lancashire, as well as an address from Ireland’s Chief Nurse Rachel Kenna. The theme of the conference was International Year of the Nurse and Midwife: Responding to Crisis and many of the papers focused on how nurses and midwives all around the world have responded so superbly to the demands placed upon them by the COVID19 pandemic. Interventions to support patients and families separated by restrictions, implementing revised prevention of infection guidelines and supporting new mothers with breastfeeding in the context of COVID-19 were some of the interesting papers delivered at the conference. A dedicated nursing and a dedicated midwifery session ran concurrently, allowing delegates to choose the session most applicable to them. There was also an excellent display of virtual posters which remain accessible to registered attendees. Recordings of some of the key sessions of the day are available on the conference page of the School’s website. Many thanks to Jean, Sian and Michael in UCC Conferencing and to the sponsors of the conference Medguard Healthcare and Cardiac Services, who helped tomake the conference a huge success. The reach of the conference was broadened through the use of our school social media accounts and we were delighted to see the conference hashtag #uccnursmid2021 was trending that day on Twitter.
