Undergraduate Success at the NUI Dr H H Stewart Medical Scholarships & Prizes 2021 The Dr Henry Hutchinson Stewart Literary and Medical Scholarships and Prizes are among the oldest awards to be offered for competition by the NUI. First established in 1888 following a bequest from the estate of Dr Henry Hutchinson Stewart, these awards were initially made by the Royal University of Ireland until its dissolution in 1908 and were then continued by the NUI. Under the terms of the trust it was provided that two-thirds of the income be allocated for the provision of medical scholarships and one-third for the provision of literary scholarships. Nominations are made by Faculties, Schools and Departments. The participating NUI institutions include UCD, UCC, NUI Galway, RCSI and St Angela’s College, Sligo; also included are overseas campuses linked to NUI institutions, including RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus, RCSI Bahrain and Perdana University (RCSI). UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery has had a remarkable record of success in the Dr Henry Hutchinson Stewart Medical Scholarships and Prizes over many years. 2021 is no exception with Tamara Horan awarded third prize in the Dr H H Stewart Medical Scholarship in Midwifery. Jessica Dempsey awarded a Scholarship in Children’s Nursing. FrancesO’Sullivanawardedsecondprize in theDrHHStewart Medical Scholarship in Children’s Nursing. Niamh Enright awarded the Dr H H Stewart Medical Scholarship in Midwifery. Congratulations to the students and their mentors. Well done. Nursing Student awarded Quercus Academic Scholarship

The Quercus Talented Students’ Programme is a scholarship programme that supports and promotes excellence in academia, sport, creative and performing arts, active citizenship & innovation/ entrepreneurship. This is now the seventh year that University College Cork is awarding Quercus Scholarships. Marieke Buckley a third year student on the Children’s and General (Integrated) Nursing programme has been awarded an academic scholarship. Successful applicants had to show outstanding achievement within their discipline(s); demonstrate evidence of provincial, national or international achievement; provide evidence of participation and engagement with their programme of studies and evidence of communication skills, dissemination and engaging with/mentoring peers, related to the discipline. Marieke has excelled in many areas including her academic studies. She has participated in and won awards at the BT Young Scientist & Technologist Exhibition, been awarded a Gaisce Bronze Medal Award, elected as Irish Second-Level Students’ Union Regional Development Officer, is an accomplished Hockey player with UCC, coaches as an Irish Sailing Association Dinghy Instructor, and she has volunteered with disadvantaged kindergarten and primary school children in Kerala, India. During the Covid-19 pandemic she also worked in the Intensive Care Unit in Cork University Hospital. Her future ambition is to work as a healthcare professional in developing or war-torn countries with an organisation such as Médecins Sans Frontieres.

School Annual Achievement Awards 2021

Celebrating the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery Annual Achievement Awards, University College Cork, it was again this year a virtual ceremony

UCC’s Interim President Professor John O’Halloran launched the momentous awards ceremony with Phil Healy, international athlete, former student of the School and a previous awards recipient providing a congratulatory video. This was the second online School of Nursing and Midwifery Annual Achievement Awards and was a celebratory occasion marking the valiant efforts of students and staff who have exhibited excellence in all aspects of university life and acknowledged students and healthcare workers who have made broader societal contributions. Winners were selected based on their exemplary performance in the 2020/2021 academic year.
