THEME 4 – CENTRE FOR SAFER STAFFING AND HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS RESEARCH (THE CATALYST CENTRE)

Programme of Research into Safe Nurse Staffing and Skill-Mix The Research Team on the Programme of Research into Safe Nurse Staffing and Skill-Mix (UCC and UCD) have been conducting research in the long-term residential care (LTRC) setting. This work is funded by the Health Research Board and the Department of Health and is led by Professor Jonathan Drennan. Ms Rachel Linehan presented on the baseline staff outcomes from the LTRC settings at the Annual School of Nursing and Midwifery Research Conference in University College Cork in March 2023. These outcomes included job satisfaction and intention to stay. Results showed that there was high job satisfaction and high intention to stay for staff in the LTRC setting (greater than 70%). The results provided a key insight into staff outcomes within this setting particularly following the onset of a pandemic. Further information on the results from the long-term residential care settings is available here: Interim Report

The research team also developed and tested a model of safe nurse staffing and skill-mix for the emergency settings in Ireland as part of the Programme of Research. Professor Jonathan Drennan and Ms Rachel Linehan travelled to the “4th Global Conference on Emergency Nursing and Trauma Care”, Gothenburg, Sweden in November 2023, where Professor Drennan presented the results on staff outcomes in the emergency departments. The conference provided a great opportunity to network and listen to the many innovative ideas around healthcare internationally.
