PART A: TEACHING, CONTRIBUTION TO COMMUNITY AND PRACTICE, AWARDS
Diversifying the student cohort – Ghana case study A marketing and recruitment visit to Ghana was undertaken from the 15th to 21st of January 2023 by Ms Carol Condon and Dr Helen Mulcahy, in conjunction with Mr Gearoid McCarthy (Medicine & Health International Manager) and Astolinks Recruitment Agency (based in Ghana). The purpose was to build on the School of Nursing and Midwifery’s successful internationalisation track record and is aligned with goal three of UCC Strategy (2023). During the trip, which included the capital Accra and Kumasi city, visits were made to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana, the Ghana Registered Nurses & Midwifery Association, and the Scholarship Secretariat as well as hospitals and universities. These latter included Korle-Bu Midwifery and Nursing training college which is the largest and oldest training college in Accra having been established in 1945, and KNUST University in Kumasi. The team had a radio interview at LUVfm Metropolitan Mix show with Nana Akua to promote education in UCC. The interview was recorded and streamed live on Facebook. There were 300 messages to Astolinks post interview. Another radio interview was on the Super Morning show with Alanna at Joy FM in Kumasi. With all visits there was general support for travel and further education up to PhD level for Ghanian nurses as Ghana educates more nurses/midwives than they can employ. The visit was deemed very successful with a very strong interest from nurses to study in Ireland, with a considerable increase in applications from Ghana alone in the past year.
Highlights • This small effective team met key strategic nursing leaders in Ghana and established relationships for the future. • The team reached thousands of people on two radio interviews and met over 700 potential applicants on a post visit webinar when they returned to UCC.
