The Elaine Drummond Perpetual Award Presented to Ms Alana Murphy
Edina Hanley receives ‘Outstanding Peer of the Year’ Award at Bright Futures Postgraduate Research Day Edina Hanley, PhD candidate, received the ‘Outstanding Peer of the Year’ award at the College of Medicine and Health “Bright Futures – Celebrating our Researchers” Research Day on April 26th. Edina started her research journey on the MSc (Res) programme within two years of completing her undergraduate studies. As such, the world of research and studying as an individual was new to her. However, she engaged with her studies with determination and resolve to progress. She used her experience to support her peers who started their research journey’s with and after her. She often meets students for “a coffee and a catch-up” to discuss each other’s progress and work in a supportive and genuine way. She spoke to prospective students about her experiences as a research student, openly sharing the challenges and opportunities of undertaking research while juggling life outside the university. She has supported students with childcare to attend supervisions and meetings. She discussed her experiences as someone new to teaching to reassure and guide new students. She presented and shared her learning from different parts of her studies at the School of Nursing and Midwifery research days and Intellectual Disability Post Graduate Research seminars. In her teaching on the BSc Nursing (Intellectual Disability) programme, she has become a role model for undergraduate students. This is done in an unassuming way and to Edina, it seems like the obvious thing to do.
Dr Maria Caples gave a wonderful address remembering her dearly departed colleague and friend Elaine Drummond on the presentation of the Elaine Drummond perpetual award. Elaine worked as a team member of the Intellectual Disability Lecturing Team at the School of Nursing and Midwifery and was a valued member of staff. The award was presented to Ms Alana Murphy, a student on the year four BSc Intellectual Disability Nursing programme, on 14th September 2023. Alana was described as being empathetic, dynamic, forward thinking, friendly and courteous with a passion for supporting people with an intellectual disability to achieve their goals. Alana is a great ambassador for intellectual disability nursing.
Congratulations Edina!
