FOREWORD
In 2023, the School of Nursing and Midwifery made significant contributions to our health services and impacted on patient outcomes through evidence based education of student nurses and midwives and leadership in engaged research. We are delighted to present this report, which provides exemplars of scholarly activities across teaching and learning, research and contribution to profession/community. We are very proud of the fact that UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery has attained a top 50 place in the QS subject rankings for a 4th consecutive year and is the highest ranked subject in UCC. Our strategic goal is to be recognised as one of the top Schools of Nursing and Midwifery in the World. The prestigious ranking of 32nd place, up one from 2022, is a testament to the dedication and hard work of staff in the School, and our clinical partners who strive for excellence in teaching, clinical practice and research. Being consistently ranked in the top 50 is reflective of the reputation that our graduates hold as current and future leaders in healthcare and education. It is also an acknowledgement that the School is leading research which is tackling global challenges and shaping evidence-based practice. In terms of research impact, UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery is ranked number one in Ireland for H-index citations (score 86.9), meaning that published works of staff in the School are among the most highly cited worldwide. This impact metric reflects the breadth of research activity, where 2023 saw the highest number of funded research projects led by staff in the School. Among the 33 active research projects in the School, we secured a prestigious €7.5 million Horizon Europe grant as Coordinators aimed at improving the lives
of people with advanced dementia in Nursing Homes and a €2.5 million HRB Applied Programme Grant to improve national supports for breastfeeding. The policy and practice impact from the evidence produced and translated by staff in the School is nationally and internationally recognized. In 2023, the School welcomed over 60 international students and engaged in teaching and learning activities with almost 1200 undergraduate and postgraduate students. 2023 also saw one of the highest numbers of MSc (taught/research) and PhD students pursing studies at this level in the School, with just over 200 registered across these courses. This report showcases student graduations and successes, with some receiving Quercus Scholarships, Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) awards and student achievement awards across multiple categories. We are glad to be able to recognise and celebrate the wonderful work of these inspiring students. Our student cohort comprises of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and genders which is enriching for all. Reflecting our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), we have consistently prioritised fostering, recruiting, and advancing equitable practices. We are proud that our graduates have gone on to assume senior leadership roles, underscoring our dedication to creating inclusive opportunities. This year we have commenced work on the application for the renewal of our Athena Swan Bronze award. We look forward to submitting this in 2024 and implementing the actions which focus on underrepresented groups and which will enable us to maximise our efforts to diversify our school staff and
students. I welcome the establishment of an Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) committee at School level which will support the Athena Swan principles. While acknowledging these significant achievements, we believe there is much more that can be done and, in this regard, we have developed an implementation plan for UCC’s Strategic Plan 2023-2028. The School of Nursing and Midwifery’s strategic implementation plan provides a framework for us to pursue our ambitions in relation to each strategic goal inclusive of; leading innovation and ensuring quality in teaching & learning; impactful research which informs policy and practice at local, national and global level; fulfilment of student and staff potential and sustainment of genuine clinical and social partnerships in order to inspire and enable our students and staff to contribute to the care, empowerment, health and wellbeing of the population We hope that you enjoy reading about the many successes and achievements of our staff and students during the reporting period January 2023 to December 2023 and finally we wish to thank all our stakeholders and clinical partners for collaborating with us to ensure we remain one of the top providers of nursing and midwifery education in Ireland and producers of applied research, internationally.

Diversifying the student cohort – Ghana case study A marketing and recruitment visit to Ghana was undertaken from the 15th to 21st of January 2023 by Ms Carol Condon and Dr Helen Mulcahy, in conjunction with Mr Gearoid McCarthy (Medicine & Health International Manager) and Astolinks Recruitment Agency (based in Ghana). The purpose was to build on the School of Nursing and Midwifery’s successful internationalisation track record and is aligned with goal three of UCC Strategy (2023). During the trip, which included the capital Accra and Kumasi city, visits were made to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana, the Ghana Registered Nurses & Midwifery Association, and the Scholarship Secretariat as well as hospitals and universities. These latter included Korle-Bu Midwifery and Nursing training college which is the largest and oldest training college in Accra having been established in 1945, and KNUST University in Kumasi. The team had a radio interview at LUVfm Metropolitan Mix show with Nana Akua to promote education in UCC. The interview was recorded and streamed live on Facebook. There were 300 messages to Astolinks post interview. Another radio interview was on the Super Morning show with Alanna at Joy FM in Kumasi. With all visits there was general support for travel and further education up to PhD level for Ghanian nurses as Ghana educates more nurses/midwives than they can employ. The visit was deemed very successful with a very strong interest from nurses to study in Ireland, with a considerable increase in applications from Ghana alone in the past year.
Highlights • This small effective team met key strategic nursing leaders in Ghana and established relationships for the future. • The team reached thousands of people on two radio interviews and met over 700 potential applicants on a post visit webinar when they returned to UCC.

School of Nursing and Midwifery develops an Erasmus+ exchange programme specifically for PhD students. The School of Nursing and Midwifery have celebrated another first! The School has developed an Erasmus+ exchange programme specifically for PhD students with ViD Specialized University in Oslo, Norway and welcomed Anne-Martha Utne Øygarden who is the first PhD candidate to avail of this. Anne-Martha visited the School of Nursing and Midwifery on an Erasmus exchange for 3 months. Anne-Martha is a PhD Fellow at VID Specialized University in Oslo, Norway and in her final year of completing her thesis.
International Students Social Trip 2023. 38 students from the BSc Nursing Studies and MSc (Non-EU) Nursing programmes, along with staff from the School, had a very successful trip to West Cork in May 2023 as part of their cultural experience of studying in Cork. Seven countries were represented: Nigeria, China, Ghana, Malawi, South Korea, India, and Ireland! First stop was Inchydoney beach where the students embraced the wind and the sun to walk the beach and marvel at the huge waves as well as taking the opportunity to dance a little to the beat of some great Nigerian music. Lunch was in Clonakilty where everyone had time to browse the shops and enjoy the lovely town. Then it was onto Castlefreke Woods where the bluebells awaited in the woodland walk. The final stop was Ownahincha for an ice cream and the last views of the Atlantic Ocean before heading back to Cork. A great day was had by all.
Anne-Martha’s thesis is entitled ‘Perinatal depression symptoms and Parental stress among first-time mothers’. Anne-Martha holds a bachelors degree in Nursing from Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) and an MSc degree in Health Science from the University of Oslo (UiO). She has a particular interest in perinatal mental health and early intervention in municipal health services. Anne-Martha was part of the team in the Maternity, Primary Care and Families Research Cluster - Maternity, Families and Primary Care | University College Cork (ucc.ie) during her time here.

Facilitating Interprofessional Learning in Infant Mental Health An existing clinical partnership between Dr Helen Mulcahy and Ms Helen Kelly, child health training / development officer in the Health Service Executive (HSE) South, led to the facilitation of Interprofessional learning (IPL) in Infant Mental Health (IMH) in the School of Nursing and Midwifery on the 9th of June 2023. Best practice in relation to perinatal and IMH indicates that such practice should be collaborative and multi-disciplinary in nature, as this supports all professionals to develop a shared language and basic understanding of perinatal and IMH. This seminar introduced key IMH concepts and shared case examples. It was aimed at practitioners who work with very young children (aged 0-5); women in the perinatal period; and adults with babies and young children. It was led by Dr Sinead Drew, Senior Clinical Psychologist, Urogynaecology Department, CUMH, Dr Freda Wynne, Senior Clinical Psychologist, Perinatal Mental Health, CUMH, Dr Paula Hurley, Clinical Psychologist, West Cork Adult Mental Health Service. Dr Hannah O’Connor, Senior Clinical Psychologist, Mental Health and Intellectual Disability. It was open to staff and students in the College of Medicine and Health and attended by over 90 people. These included nurses, midwives, public health nurses (PHNs), psychologists, students and other health care professionals. To ensure sustainability, discussions commenced to embed this training workshop into PHN student education for the September 2023 cohort and beyond. The commitment to IPL is supported by collaboration with Ms Mary O’Connor, Director, Centre of Midwifery Education in CUMH.

Inaugural Meeting of the School of Nursing and Midwifery EDIB Student Forum On the 16th of October, in the School, we hosted the inaugural meeting of our School’s Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Student Forum. This incredible and insightful group of students shared their experiences and critical insights into how we can work together to make our School and programmes more inclusive and welcoming. This meeting was facilitated by Dr Angela Flynn (Chair Athena Swan) and Dr Brendan Noonan (Co-Chair Athena Swan). It was incredible to hear all of the students’ wise and insightful comments and suggestions. We really appreciated their honesty and their generosity of time during a busy semester. At a time when the world seems to be becoming more divided, and when there are people busy sowing division, it is truly heartening to see students come together and engage so positively to make our school a more welcoming, diverse and inclusive space. Exciting times ahead.

Presentations on the “Feasibility, Usability and Implementation of VIrtual Reality SImulatiON (VISION) in Nursing and Midwifery Education” at three Research and Teaching and Learning Events. Dr Mohamad Saab received the College of Medicine and Health Learning & Teaching Innovation Awards to test the feasibility and usability of implementing virtual reality (VR) simulation in undergraduate nursing and midwifery education. This project involved engaging 43 nursing and midwifery students with a 20-minute VR simulation scenario of their choice. Students then completed a 21-item survey comprising a sociodemographic questionnaire, the System Usability Scale, a satisfaction questionnaire, and open-ended questions. Findings were promising, showing that VR simulation was perceived as user friendly, informative, enjoyable, fostering safe and self directed learning without causing patient harm. This project is a key deliverable from the Working Group chaired by Dr Brendan Noonan on the implementation of VR Education into the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Curriculum within the School of Nursing and Midwifery. In 2023, Dr Saab was invited to present about this project on three occasions, the first during the College of Medicine and Health Teaching and Curriculum Committee meeting, the second during the College of Medicine and Health Teaching and Learning Showcase, and the third during the School of Nursing and Midwifery Annual Research Conference. A paper from this project is published Open Access in Computers, Informatics, Nursing: CIN. Lead and Team Members: Dr Mohamad Saab (Principal Investigator), Ms. Megan McCarthy, Mr. Billy O’Mahony, Mr. Eoghan Cooke, Professor Josephine Hegarty, Mr. David Murphy, Ms. Nuala Walshe, and Dr Brendan Noonan.
