SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY AT A GLANCE

About the Programme The PG Certificate – Medical/surgical pathway 3 programme recognises the need for specialist postgraduate education to assist general nurses meet the challenges of increased levels of patient acuity along with ethical and patient-safety challenges in medical-surgical settings. The programme is for ward-based nursing staff, working within the multidisciplinary team, seeking the relevant knowledge and skills to enable them deliver evidence-based care in a competent manner while cognisant of the needs of individual patients and their significant others. Students described the first module (research) as very valuable in developing their ability to both critically appraise research and apply it to nursing practice Following the last module, students felt that it “empowered” them to manage more effectively the moral challenges they encountered in every day clinical practice. Course Delivery The structure of the programme delivery is blended which means that elements of modules are delivered as classes (teaching and learning strategies include lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials a number of which are now delivered online) along with online content using our virtual learning environment: Canvas (teaching and learning strategies include module study guides, discussion boards, audio/visual resources and online assessments/activities). There are eight days of classes over 16 weeks (normally one every two weeks). This provides greater flexibility and allows students to work at their own pace. Entry Requirements This programme is open to Registered General Nurses with a minimum of six months post registration experience (excluding courses) and at least three months experience in medical or surgical wards Applicants need to hold active registration on the professional register maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
