MEDICAL AND SURGICAL NURSING

This programme is mainly online

SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY AT A GLANCE

About the Programme The PG Diploma – Medical/surgical pathway 8 is a very practically based Programme to assist general nurses meet the challenges of increased levels of patient acuity along with ethical and patient-safety challenges in medical surgical settings. There is particular emphasis on the development of assessment skills and early detection of patient deterioration as well as nurse-led (and multidisciplinary) interventions. The self-directed, theoretical and physical skills’ learning is then applied to simulated critical, clinical incident scenarios within our State-of-the-Art Clinical Skills & Simulation Resource Centre (CSSRC). Having Clinical and Advanced Nurse Specialists in nursing , medicine and allied professionals actively involved in the delivery and theoretical input of the programme greatly enhances the clinical practice application of this particular programme. To date nurses have enjoyed the challenges of this programme and enhanced career prospects following their personal and professional development and autonomy. See students’ testimonials in “Why choose this course” on the UCC prospectus page: https://www.ucc.ie/en/ckw15/ Course Delivery The structure of the programme delivery is blended which means the course content is delivered through lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials and simulations in combination with online content delivery using our virtual learning environment, known as Canvas. Some classes are online and others are face to face. There are eight days of classes over 16 weeks (normally one every two weeks) in each semester. This provides greater flexibility and allows students to work at their own pace. PG students from other programmes (including international students) join some modules. This increases the cultural diversity in relation to Health Care Provider backgrounds which in turn further enhances discussions and cross fertilization of ideas around nurse-led clinical practice decision-making within private, public, Irish and other health service providers. Entry Requirements This programme is open to Registered General Nurses. Applicants must have a minimum of six months of post-registration experience (excluding courses) and at least six months experience working in medical or surgical wards/units.
